the story of our Portugal house

Then and now

In 1999 we embarked upon a journey that changed our lives. After living in Portugal for 3 months , hoping to find a vacation property to buy, the day before we left, we recieved a phone call that led us to Vasco who in turn led us to Boxa. This is the story of Boxa, then and now: where it is, changes, neighbours and interesting spots nearby. While there are many fine rental houses and vacation properties in Portugal, we preferred to look for our own stone house in the Coimbra / Leria region. We liked the area of central Portugal, south of Coimbra, near Pombal, in the Serra de Sico, famous for its cheese and gliding amongst other things.

Inside the house

Our house (sleeps 4) is available for limited rentals - please email us for details. We are located in a quiet farming village within easy reach of Lisbon, Porto and many other Portuguese charms. Although not a prime tourist area of Portugal, the regiao de Leira / Coimbra has many excellent attractions. Beaches and resorts include Sao Pedro de Moel, Figeira da Foz, Oso de Baleia and Costa da Lava. The city of Coimbra has much to offer such as the university area, the old town with its narrow streets and great shopping.

The ancient Roman ruins of Conimbriga at Condeixa are extensive and well worth a visit. Don't leave central Portugal without visiting the walled hill town of Obidos. Not too far away (just south of Leira) is the Moisteiro de Batalha and the Monastery at Alcobaca, both deserving of at least three to four hour visits.
